The Many Different Meanings of Birds Tattoos |

Birds have always represented the freedom of a human spirit or the soul in general. Cultures across the world have found the most profound
symbolism in these graceful creatures and often connected them with the world of gods.
These divine creatures often accompanied heroes of ancient myths and legends. Their ability to fly allowed them to see far and wide, thus they could warn the hero of any danger and help him defeat monsters, villains, dragons and other antagonistic characters. This also gave rise to a common phrase: “A little bird told me.” Because they can fly, people often associate them with the supernatural sphere or with magical powers, often also with religion. Evidence can be seen all around the world. In Egyptian crypts, birds are depicted as hovering over mummies. In a different part of the world, Arapaho Indians use bird motifs on their Ghost Dance costumes. The Christian tradition has found inspiration in these feathered creatures in the portrayal of angels or cherubs. Birds are mostly used to convey a positive and uplifting message. In the world of tattoo design birds hold a special place. A tattoo inspired by them often includes more than one of these creatures. Duality of nature is often symbolized by the depiction of two birds of a different color (usually opposite – dark and light) or through a combination of a bird and a different type of animal. Bird fighting a snake is a common theme for a tattoo and it stands for the battle between good and evil. A tattoo design that includes birds also often also depicts trees, especially the Tree of Life. There are other, less common, interpretations that can be found. In China, the word for this animal “niao” also means penis. Sexual meanings implied by the image of a rooster, or a “cock”, come from the Ancient Rome. Birds of ParadiseThese are very often displayed in flight. Because they can rise high above the earth, they are used to symbolize all that is above the earthly and everyday problems. Paradise birds represent the miracle of life and those who choose these tattoos probably want to rise spiritually above worldly matters.
FalconThese skilled hunters owe their success to their incredible vision. They can spot their prey while flying a mile above the ground. This quality has made falcons an inspiration for those who say they want to “see the big picture”. Symbolism of these birds includes superior intellectual attributes and careful judgment. A falcon is an impulse for you to widen your horizon and to avoid a short sighted view of the world. The symbolism that this bird represents can be summed up in several words – vision, freedom, determination, nobility, devotion, honor, skill, focus and strength.
HawksHawks are very focused and determined hunters. They are very successful in overcoming distractions and thus are a great symbol of concentration. Tenacity in their missions is very strong and the pursuit of their object of desire and accomplishment of goals is inspirational for many people. Moreover, their ability to soar makes them a favorite symbol for heavenly freedom.Celtic myths depicted these birds when they wanted to express freedom and success. Hawks were also often presented as conquerors over lust and this was expressed by a rabbit (a Celtic symbol for lust) in the hawk’s talons.
